Santa Lucia, Merchant City
Hi all! On this blog post I’ve decided to focus on the restaurant Santa Lucía in Merchant City. Ive visited a couple of times, and what I truly appreciated was the beautiful interior and friendly staff. The decor has lovely Mediterranean vibes, with the lemons, white walls and plenty of greenery. It’s a bright space, filled with ambient lighting that creates a welcoming atmosphere. What I also liked was the formal atmosphere, it makes it a wonderful choice for a special meal. Upon arrival, guests are greeted warmly, with jackets taken and drinks offered. Each table has a dedicated server, which adds a personalised touch to the dining experience and sets a positive tone for the evening.
During my first visit, I opted for the set menu at £55, which included three courses and a Prosecco. The cocktails were nice, with standard drinks at around £10. so a little bit steeper than Santa Lucia. My thoughts on the food is that it was good not great; While the homemade pasta was cooked perfectly- (traditional al dente Italian style) and the seafood was fresh, the overall flavours were somewhat lacking. The arancini ball to start was quite small and dry, which was disappointing, and the dessert was mediocre. Although the price was not overly expensive, the portion sizes were small, and the food didn’t quite meet my expectations.
On my second visit, I tried the à la carte menu, which offered ten pasta options. I expected a more extravagant selection, but found the choices limited in terms of classic dishes like carbonara or bolognese. The prices ranged from £12 to £17, which isn’t bad. I had the penne arrabbiata, and while the pasta was nice, the flavours fell short compared to the arrabbiata from Sugo, which is a lot more satisfying and at a lower price. I also noticed a lot of the pasta dishes contained meat or fish and only a few were vegetarian which might be something to consider before you visit if that's yourself or you don't particularly enjoy meat/fish dishes.
Overall, Santa Lucía offers a lovely atmosphere, attentive service, and a high-quality selection of cocktails and wine. However, there are some areas that could be improved, particularly with portion sizes for starters and sides, as well as the overall flavour profiles, especially considering the price point. While I wouldn't be in a hurry to return, I wouldn't oppose dining there again. It’s a decent Italian restaurant with potential.
